Write a poem using your stoplight paragraphs. It must be at least 10 lines, have 3 metaphors and 3 personifications. Please don't rhyme!!!


Here is the beginning stages of my own example for "The World As I See It"
The World as I see It:
I think the world is a big round Ferris wheel that we have to ride on but we can’t get off.
When I see flowers in half-bloom, like my lemon tree and a bee sipping the nectar out to make honey for my tongue, it gives me hope that everything will remain the same.
Life will change, but like the honey, we have to hope that it will transform into something sweeter.
The world is full of highways, people screaming and beeping at each other to move out of the way.
But it is also filled with blood red poppy fields where cameleons stick on hot rocks boiled by the sun.
It can be still like a pond or a deep sleeping baby.
I can watch the wings of the swallow as it swoops to land on a telephone poll, its tallons grasping the thick brown wood.
Industry clasping nature.
My daughter smiles up at me with trusting hazel eyes as she turns to dash up the hill in her new baby blue and canary yellow sneakers.
My son, hands opening wide, walks down the street singing to himself and then he stops to see three black crows. They look from far away like they understand each other. To the crows he speaks their language.


We can’t get off the big, round Ferris wheel,
Like life we must hang on or fall off.
Flowers in half-bloom
Bees sipping on white lemon tree buds
Making honey for my tongue.
Highways like veins on old hands,
People exploding with anger
While swallows clasp dead
wooden telephone polls.
Blood-red poppy fields
hold rock-still iguanas..
Trusting hazel eyes dash up
The hill in swift sneakers..
SInging son speaks
The language of crows.

Finish your stoplight paragraph about things that frighten you.
Then make it into a poem of at least 8 lines.
Remember to add one example of alliteration, personification and simile.

I am afraid of...
I'm not really afraid of much. But big dogs who bark a lot make me queasy. I want to get away from them so I can avoid seeing and hearing them. I do get a bit scared if it's dark and I'm alone, but only if no one is near. If I know that someone is down the hall, I'm okay. I'm afraid of saying something stupid in class and having people laugh at me. My sister says I should be afraid of spiders, but I'm not. I also am not afraid of snakes, but I know that I wouldn't want to meet one unexpetedly. I don't believe in ghosts but I still don't like to hear strange sounds.

Parents: Please make sure your children are doing their writing homework! Out of the entire third grade, I only had about a dozen kids turn homework in last week and this week. It is ESSENTIAL that they do their work so that they learn how to write!!!
